The PTA Needs YOU!!!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!  The PTA is seeking additional members to help this year and beyond.  They currently have 2 openings on the PTA board and several open positions that oversee committees.   The PTA and DDMS has a long-standing tradition of supporting each other and the teaching/learning that happens in the building.  We wouldn’t be one of the top middle schools in the state of North Carolina without the support of the PTA.  If you are interested and willing to support the PTA, please contact Mr. Williams (rwilliams5@wcpss.net).  Please also consider volunteering this upcoming school year for school and PTA events.

Camp Schedule

Wednesday, August 23rd students will be able to pick up their class schedule, meet their teachers, walk the school, ask questions, purchase locks, agendas, spirit wear, and much much more!  This is a fantastic opportunity to prepare for the first day of school.  Below are the specific times and details for each grade level:

  • 6th Graders last name A-L → 8:30 - 10:00

  • 6th Graders last name M-Z → 10:30 - 12:00

    • Each session will begin in the auditorium with a brief presentation for rising 6th grade parents and students.  Afterward, parents and students will be able to meet their teachers and walk throughout the building in an informal fashion.

  • 7th Graders → 1:30 - 2:30

  • 8th Graders → 2:30 - 3:30

    • This is an informal time for 7th and 8th graders to pick up their schedules and meet teachers.  Feel free to arrive anytime within the allotted timeframe to visit the various locations through the building.

All Special Education Students 

Do you want to meet your case managers and get your schedules before Panther Pride Camp? If so, please join us on Tuesday, August 22nd from 5-6pm in the Media Center.  This is a great opportunity to meet your case manager, meet your grade level Assistant Principal, see the school, and ask general questions in a small setting.  We hope to see you there!


Locks and Lockers

This upcoming school year students will have the option of having a locker or carrying their materials to class.  We are making a conscious effort to help reduce anxieties/frustrations related to lockers or being tardy to class.  Additionally, many students don’t even use lockers in high school!  Students interested in having a locker will be assigned one during the first week of school.  Locks should be purchased from the school during Panther Pride Camp.  We are excited about this student choice in our building!


Agendas

Student agendas will be on sale for $5 during Panther Pride Camp by the PTA.  Students are required to have an agenda in order to stay organized, track SMART Block attendance, and to monitor minor infractions.  Additionally, important student information and expectations are found in the agenda.


Withdrawing Students 

As we prepare for the upcoming 2017-18 school year, it is important to have an accurate count of student enrollments.  If you know you will not be attending Davis Drive Middle School this year, please come to the school and officially withdraw your students.  This is extremely helpful when constructing our student schedules and program planning. 


PE/Fitness Uniform Update 

It is mandatory that students wear a GRAY shirt and NAVY BLUE athletic shorts/pants each day for PE and Fitness.  While these outfits don’t have to be Davis Drive Middle specific apparel, we do have various options for you to purchase uniforms.  Please see the options below:

  • Ordering Online: You may visit this website to order a uniform of your choosing.  Please note that the ordering window will close in early September.  These uniforms will be delivered to school approximately during the middle of the 1st quarter.  Another purchasing window will open after school starts.
  • Panther Pride Camp:  Uniforms can also be purchased at school during Panther Pride Camp on August 23rd.  There will various sizes available to purchase on site.  There will be a limited number available in each size & brand, so plan accordingly.
  • On Your Own: As mentioned above, uniforms don’t have to be purchased from us or have to be DDMS specific.  Any gray shirt and navy blue shorts/pants are acceptable.

2017-18 Transportation Information

Transportation information is currently available to view in Home Base/ PowerSchool.  Bus routes will be posted on the internet on Friday, August 18.  Additionally, during the week of August 21, families will receive an email via enhanced SchoolMessenger providing bus route information specific to your child.  Please be on the look-out for this important information.


Rising 7th Grade Reminder 

This is a reminder for parents of Rising 7th graders. North Carolina now requires Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines for entry into the 7th grade. Please take care of this during the summer and bring updated vaccine records to the main office as soon as possible.


 

 

Words can’t express how thankful and appreciative we are at Davis Drive Middle School for the support of the parents, students, teachers, and community at our beautification day last week.  THANK YOU for taking the time to work with us!  The campus looks amazing!  We plan to hold another beautification day in the fall so stay tuned.

Student Schedules  

The Admin Team is working hard to create the best possible schedule for each student this summer.  Please note that schedules will not be finalized until mid-August and students will be able to pick up their schedules at Panther Pride Camp.  While students may be able to see their schedules in PowerSchools, these are not finalized and are subject to change.  Thank you for your understanding.


Volunteer Opportunities

The DDMS PTA is looking for parents to become involved through the many PTA opportunities available for the 2017-18 school year. Please look over the list of committees and check the areas you are interested in. This does not obligate you, we will simply email you when opportunities come up that match your interest. The future of the activities we can offer next year depends on our talented parents to come forward and volunteer.

New Math 1 &

6th Grade ELA Resources  

New curriculum resources will be utilized this year in both Math 1 and 6th grade Language Arts classes.  WCPSS spent the past year vetting resources that would align with state standards and would provide students with rigorous and collaborative learning opportunities.  For more information about the curriculum resources, please view the videos & documents links below:

With the weather rapidly changing to beautiful spring weather, please remember that students should wear appropriate clothing for school.  Expectations are outlined in the DDMS Student Agenda.  Some highlights include:

  • No tight or short clothing is allowed (i.e. tight and/or short skirts, shorts should be visible, etc)
  • All undergarments (bras, underwear, boxers, etc) must be completely covered
  • No mid-riff tops, spaghetti straps, strapless shirts, halter tops, transparent blouses, etc.  

Please take a moment in the mornings to ensure your children are dressed appropriately.  Thanks for your support in this.

  New Messenger System

This week we begin the new school communication system.  You will now be receiving Mr. Williams' weekly parent message through email and/or text message.  He will only be utilizing a voicemail message in emergency or critical situation.  If you are having any problems accessing these email/texts messages, please let the front office know.  All messages are also posted on our school website under the “Principal’s Message” icon in the middle of the page.  Important messages that may need immediate attention will also be posted on the website under “Panther News.”  Thank you for your patience as we transition to this new communication format.


Please remember to follow carpool procedures and guidelines to ensure smooth morning drop-offs:

1) Please remember that students should not be picked-up or dropped-off on Davis Drive road.  Officer Cherry and I have had recent conversations with parents and students about this legal violation.  This is a major safety concern. Additionally, do not pick-up or drop-off on the side of the building (unless you have a medical concern and have clearance from Mr. Williams).  All parents should be using the carpool loop.

2) In the mornings, please be sure you are turning right on Davis Drive road toward Park Village.  Many parents are attempting to left through commute traffic and are significantly delaying our morning carpool procedures.  The morning right turn is extremely important to ensure we have an efficient morning carpool and students are in class on-time.
